Congratulations on your pregnancy! We know first hand that this journey of growing your family can be simultaneously exciting, overwhelming, scary and joy filled. Our hope is to partner with you and your family in order to provide you with the information, support, knowledge and reassurance that you need to feel fully equipped to welcome this new phase of life.
We are passionate about this beautiful place we call home, and about ensuring that all families have access to their choice of maternity care provider in their own home community. We also believe that pregnancy and birth are both normal and tremendously significant times in the life of the individual, the family, and in the wider community. It is a privilege and a gift to share these unique and profound experiences with the families of Sooke.

Uta Herold, Registered midwife

With her mother being a midwife, Uta got in touch with the profession in her earliest childhood. At five years of age she found her calling and decided to become a midwife.
In 1981, she graduated from the midwifery program at the university in Magdeburg, Germany, a school with a history of more than 230 years of midwifery education. She has worked as a midwife ever since and has attended approximately 2500 births to date.
Within her midwifery practice, she has also worked as a prenatal class instructor and a Pelvic Floor Class instructor. In 1995, she graduated from a three year program in Classical Homeopathy, and in 2006 attended a one year program in Traditional Chinese Medicine with a focus in obstetrics. Uta includes her knowledge and experience in these complementary therapies whenever it is indicated and meets the interests of her clients.
Her passion for this special profession is nourished by every birth she attends. Being able to share this unique and profound experience with women and their families is a great gift for Uta that never becomes routine.
Uta is a mother of two boys, born in 1999 and 2001.

Kaitlyn Whitworth, Registered midwife

~Currently on sabbatical for the remainder of 2020~
Kaitlyn has been working in maternity care since 2006, when she co-founded the West Coast Doula Collective in Port Alberni after finding her passion for supporting families through pregnancy and birth. In 2013 she received her Bachelor degree with honors in Midwifery from the University of Otago in New Zealand. She then returned home to Vancouver Island and had her own daughter, born in 2014.
Kaitlyn has a wide range of experience, from supporting women in a large, high-risk obstetric hospital to supporting and guiding families through homebirth in rural & remote communities. To each situation, regardless of how diverse, Kaitlyn brings her intuitive and empathetic care to meet the specific needs of the person and family she is caring for. Delighted to now be settled and practicing in Sooke, Kaitlyn feels so very privileged to support local women and their families in growing new Sooke babies!
Kaitlyn believes that all people deserve maternity care that is respectful, professional, and centered on their own unique needs. The client-midwife partnership provides time and space for sharing information (both ways!), and for the development of a trusted relationship. She is constantly learning from women and their families in the context of this relationship, and is genuinely grateful!

Crystal Herie, Registered Midwife

~We are so excited to have Crystal working with us as a fully registered New Registrant until summer 2021~
To the lovely families of Sooke Midwifery:
Thank you for sharing your pregnancy and childbirth experiences with me, giving me the opportunity to learn and grow as a midwife. I look forward to offering the pillars of midwifery care that attracted me to the profession, such as advocacy, informed choice, and continuity of care. As an island girl myself, I have lived, worked, played, and raised my family in Sooke since 2005. My midwifery path started many moons ago. My Mother worked alongside a midwife in Alberta while going to university for nursing in the early 1990’s. I was fascinated by her work and loved to sneak upstairs in the wee hours of the morning when she’d arrive back home to chat with her about the birth. Shortly after the birth of my Son in 2009 I began working as a doula in and around Sooke. I was involved in the start-up of the Sooke breastfeeding support group, and hosted the Sooke positive birth group for over a year prior to starting the midwifery program. Now that I have graduated with a Bachelor of midwifery degree, I am so excited to be working full time with Sooke midwifery!
